Liverpool’s current form is worrying. The English champions have now lost four consecutive games in all competitions, the latest coming at home to Manchester United last weekend.
The Reds have gone from having a perfect record in the league after five games to still having 15 points after eight games. Arsenal currently sit four points ahead of them, which is by no means an insurmountable lead, but Liverpool’s form should worry Arne Slott. After winning the league title last season, Slaughter is now in a tough spot.
In this article, we will discuss three changes that Slott should make to improve Liverpool’s form.
How can Arne Slott improve Liverpool’s form?
#1. Replace Mohamed Salah with Federico Chiesa from the start
Mohamed Salah has been far from his usual form this season. The 33-year-old Egyptian has achieved milestones for Liverpool in the past and is one of their greatest ever players. However, this is not enough at the moment as his current form is not up to par.
The problem for Liverpool is that they no longer have Harvey Elliott in their squad, who could replace Salah on the right side of midfield as a substitute. As a result, Salah spends more time on the pitch than he should. Chiesa is the only player in Liverpool’s squad who can play on the right wing.
The Italian has only made 21 appearances for the Reds so far and is much younger than Salah so should now have the chance to make his mark. If he fails to deliver on his promise, then Slaughter might consider taking another call on that front. However, at this point, Chiesa deserves a place in the starting XI to help improve Liverpool’s form.
#2. Change formations against weaker teams
Liverpool mainly uses a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ryan Gravenburch and Alexis McAllister as double midfielders. It didn’t work out well for the Reds as Mike Allister wasn’t at his usual best.
Liverpool have been missing Mike Allister’s usual passing ability. With Trent Alexander-Arnold out of the game, they’ve lost a quality passer. Therefore, they could consider a 4-3-3 formation, consisting of a lone midfielder (Grevenberg) and two midfielders.
Then Slaughter may consider using Dominic Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones as the two No. 8 players to increase mobility in the midfield. If Szoboszlai plays at right-back, Jones and Florian Wirtz can play in midfield.
Especially against weaker teams, they have to take risks to be more aggressive. Playing with a lone No. 6 comes with some risk, but it’s something Sloter will likely have to do to win games.

#3. Hugo Ekitic joins Liverpool’s starting XI
Hugo Ekitic played a key role in the Reds’ equalizer against Manchester United and once again showed his impact on the team. With his current form, Ekitic should be in the squad in place of Alexander Isak. The Frenchman is Liverpool’s top goalscorer so far this season, with five goals in 11 games.
Isaac was unable to score from set-piece headers, nor was he able to generate sufficient pace and explosiveness in his movements in the final third.
Ekitic is faster and seems more powerful in front of the opponent’s goal. Additionally, when his team breaks through on the counterattack, he has a better chance of receiving Salah’s lateral pass because of his explosive pace.
Therefore, it would make more sense to activate Ekitic to improve Liverpool’s form. Omitting Cody Gakpo from Liverpool’s starting XI is also not an option as the Dutchman is in superb form.
