South American football has been filled with drama over the past month. From a heavyweight Libertadores showdown between Brazil’s two top teams and Neymar lifting Santos, to Colombia’s playoff chaos and title-deciding derbies across the continent, the domestic season is reaching a boiling point, with the continent’s places and trophies taking center stage.
Flamengo wins golden season title
In a rematch of the 2021 Copa Libertadores final, Flamengo defeated Palmeiras 1-0 and once again proved that they are the standard-bearers of South American football and lifted the most prestigious trophy in South America. The decisive moment came from veteran defender Danilo, whose towering header sealed the victory and instantly etched his name in Flamengo folklore. Signed in January, the former Juventus man has already achieved immortality – remarkably, it was his second Copa Libertadores-winning goal after scoring the same goal for Santos in the 2011 final.
The game itself was tense and cautious. Palmeiras struggled to control the situation and only pushed the score higher after conceding a goal, while Flamengo remained disciplined and calm. The offensive weapons of Vito Roque and Palmeiras were largely neutralized in a final that was more about structure than spectacle.
Flamengo’s dominance has also expanded domestically. They are three points ahead of Palmeiras in the Brazilian standings, with the two clubs winning 23 of 38 games. The difference is consistency: Flamengo suffered fewer defeats, turning a tight title race into a historic double. Cruzeiro, Mirasol and Fluminense will directly qualify for next season’s Copa Libertadores.
Neymar backs Santos to advance to Copa Sudamericana
Neymar’s future remains uncertain as he hopes to return to the Brazil squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, but his impact on Santos this season has been undeniable. Despite a serious knee injury that required surgery, Neymar effectively kept his boyhood club in the Copa Sudamericana – a feat that spoke volumes about his influence and commitment.
Santos have won four of their last six league games, including a crucial upset of Palmeiras that spilled into the title race. Even more impressively, they have kept clean sheets in their last three wins. Neymar scored eight goals in 20 league games and scored a hat trick on December 3. Trophies may be elusive, but his connection with Santos remains unshakable. The question is whether Neymar will stay at Santos or find another club, and whether his knee will be healthy in time to even be considered for the World Cup squad.
Racing club and students team up to organize Argentina final
Athletic Club and Estudiantes will meet in the Argentine League final after enduring a difficult playoff path shaped by continental ambitions. Both clubs had strong performances in the 2025 Copa Libertadores, with Atlético reaching the semi-finals and Estudiantes advancing to the quarter-finals, only to be eliminated by eventual champions Flamengo.
In the semi-finals, Estudiantes defeated Gimnasia y Esgrima 1-0, while Racing also had a narrow victory over Boca Juniors, but with more symbolic significance. Atlético’s route to the final reads like a statement: beating River Plate (3-2) and Boca Juniors to clinch the 2024 Copa Sudamericana after claiming it earlier this season.
Adrian Martinez once again delivered the dagger, scoring the decisive goal against Boca. Racing entered the finals with a slim margin given their momentum and big game pedigree.
Junior de Barranquilla close to Colombian league title
Junior de Barranquilla is just days away from claiming a first Liga BetPlay Dimayor title since 2023 in Colombia’s tough playoff phase. The ten-time champions represented the Caribbean Coast in the semi-finals, in a group that included Independiente MedellÃn, Atlético Nacional and América de Cali.
Led by Uruguayan goalkeeper Mauro Silveira (25), Paraguayan forward Guillermo Paiva and Colombian playmaker José Enamorado (26), Junior combines toughness with attacking flair. Paiva and Aina Morado formed one of the most productive partnerships in the league, contributing a combined 23 goals and assists.
In the home and away group matches, Junior has lost just one game and is 11 points ahead of América Cali and Atlético Nacional. Consecutive wins over the Nationals and Americas effectively sealed a spot in the finals.
Red smoke and fireworks erupted at the Barranquilla Metropolitano Stadium, home of the Colombian national team, during the first leg against Tolima. Junior struck early and often, taking a 3-0 lead inside 40 minutes. Enamorado opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a stunning Golazo, and Tolima, reduced to ten men in the second half, struggled to recover. Although Tolima will host the second leg, overturning a deficit looks daunting for a club more accustomed to finals than championships.
Tolima entered the final unbeaten since October 11 and topped Bucaramanga’s play-off group with 14 points. Meanwhile, recent champions Atlético Nacional and Santa Fe both finished third in their respective groups, underscoring the volatility of Colombia’s playoff system.
Attention now turns to MedellÃn, where Atlético Nacional and Independiente de MedellÃn will meet over two legs of the Colombian Cup final at the shared Atanasio Giraldot Stadium – with fans from both sides desperate for a derby tie for the trophy after a disappointing playoff stage.
Uruguayan national victory and concern across the continent
In Uruguay, Nacional won their 50th league title in dramatic overtime victory over old rivals Penarol. The opening match ended in a 2-2 draw, with Nigerian winger Christian Eberle scoring the decisive goal in the 114th minute of the second round. Penarol failed to respond and Nacional ended a season that also saw them top the overall standings.
Penarol’s season required a last-minute hero to reach the final, needing two extra-time goals to knock out Liverpool 2-1 in the semi-finals.
Elsewhere, Independiente del Valle continue to validate their modern blueprint in Ecuador. A second title since 2021 comes as the club’s investment in youth development and player sales has translated into continued domestic success. Meanwhile, the Ecuadorian Cup final will welcome the 2025 Copa Libertadores semi-finals of the Quito League against Universidad Católica.
In Paraguay, Cerro Porteño beat Guaranà by one point to win the 2025 Torneo Clausura title and top the overall standings for the calendar year, a reward for a consistent performance in the first and second half of the season.
