Bayern Munich’s left-back problem has resurfaced once again with the Canadian sidelined due to Alphonso Davies’ injury.

Although Bayern Munich defeated Frankfurt 3-2 and widened the gap with Dortmund, the closest rival in the Bundesliga, to 8 points, they also paid a heavy price for this.

Alphonso Davies suffered a fiber tear in his right hamstring, as the club announced last Sunday.

The injury once again poses problems for Bayern Munich’s left-back, and while there are plenty of options available to replace the Canada international for Saturday’s game against De Klacik or even later, none of them are natural left-backs.

Bayern Munich left-back question: Candidates to replace Davies

Options to solve Bayern Munich’s left-back woes include Josip Stagno, who is versatile enough to play anywhere in the back four but feels most comfortable on the right wing of the backline.

Secondly, Konrad Laimer is a hard-working midfielder who himself mainly plays right back for the club.

Hiroki ItÅ is a natural centre-back and may also be tasked with replacing Davies against Dortmund.

Another option is Tom Bischoff, a young midfielder who has regularly played at left-back this season with mixed success.

While Davies recovers from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, the former Hoffenheim midfielder has struggled against strong opposition at left-back.

Manager Vincent Kompany is also likely to select Raphael Guerrero to solve Bayern Munich’s left-back problem.

The Portuguese all-rounder can play in this position, as well as on the left wing, in holding midfield, or even as a No. 10 playmaker, but he hasn’t been used much recently apart from a brief cameo on the bench.

Guerrero’s contract expires at the end of this season and no public decision has been made on his future.

However, perhaps there is still hope for the former Borussia Dortmund man to convince Kompany and the club management that he can still be useful to Bayern in the years to come.

Perhaps Bayern Munich’s left-back issues could give him the chance he needs.
Even so, Kompany seems more likely to select Ita against Dortmund as he provides more defensive cover against such a strong opponent.

Bayern Munich left-back question: Comfortable league position

Bayern’s position in the Bundesliga is so secure that even if they lose on Saturday, they will be comfortably five points ahead of their opponents.

It will be important to see how the healing process from Alphonso Davies’ injury progresses and whether he will be out for longer.

There will be major knockout tournaments in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal in the coming weeks and months.

Bayern Munich left-back question: Davies injury not the end of the world

Maybe there is no one in the team who is completely suitable for this position, but looking back on 2019, it was the then Bayern coach Nico Kova who placed the teenager Davis in the left back position.

That didn’t save current Dortmund boss Bayern’s job, but Davies became the best left-back in the world and helped the Bavarians win the Champions League later that season alongside Hansi Flick.

Beyond that, Bayern have been excellent for a long time this season, largely without the help of Davies. While having him on the team is obviously the better option, him potentially missing a few weeks wouldn’t be the end of the world.
