Norton’s Coin – 1990 – (100/1)
Trained by Sirrel Griffiths, a dairy farmer in Carmarthenshire, West Wales, who trained three horses as a “hobby”. The Norton Gold was the biggest upset in the festival’s history and was the winner of the 1990 Gold Cup!
The race was no fluke as Norton King won the race on sheer merit, but considering he had only won once in 18 previous starts, horse racing experts couldn’t fathom how Norton King could pull it off on that day!

Carrickboy – 2013 – (50/1)
Sadly, jockey Liam Treadwell is no longer with us, but he will always be remembered for his performance in the 2009 Grand National, which he won 100-1. However, his greatest ride was probably in 2013 when he rode Carrickboy to a 50-1 victory.
Carrickboy won a 22-man handicap race, bravely attacking from the front two furlongs from home to claim a shock victory! Along with other winners like 20/1, 25/1, 16/1 and 14/1 making it one of the best ever Banker.
Cue Card – 2010 – (40/1)
Cue Card started his career in fine fashion in the 2010 Champion Bumper where the British bred horse shocked his highly regarded rival by eight lengths at odds of 40/1! The race card described it as an “easy homecoming” and the cue card was one of the biggest upsets in Cheltenham Festival history!

Snail – 1970 – (33/1)
As the horse’s name translates to “Snail”, Snail was no slouch after winning the 1970 Gold Cup at odds of 33/1. Despite being completely unfavoured, the horse won the race with trainer Dan Moore and defended the Gold Cup in 1971, with Snail winning again at odds of 7/2.
Minera India – 2019 – (50/1)
He may be mainly known for his victory in the 2021 Cheltenham Gold Cup, but the 2019 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle was one of the biggest upsets on the 2019 calendar. Early in his career Minella Indo had been beaten in three previous starts but coming to Cheltenham he won this race by two lengths!
