Bruno Fernandes has registered an impressive 19 assists in the Premier League this season. He is one step short of the Premier League single-season record of 20 assists set by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.
Naturally, this sparked a debate over whether Bruno Fernandes’ assist numbers should help him win the Premier League Player of the Season award. However, for Portugal’s No. 10, things may not be that simple.
Bruno Fernandes assists this season
Bruno Fernandes’ assist count comes as United crashed out of the FA Cup and League Cup early on and haven’t played European football this season. As such, Fernandes is relatively fresh, allowing him to focus all his energy on the Premier League.
Fernandes has only played 33 games this season, meaning he will not reach the 40-game milestone. By comparison, players such as Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Erling Haaland have played around 50 games. These players have clearly had a busier season than Fernandez.
Fernandes has been the number 10 since Michael Carrick took over the club a few months ago. The Portuguese is United’s only truly creative midfielder, meaning he is free to cross and pass without having to worry about his defensive responsibilities.
Bruno Fernandes’ assist numbers are a fair reflection of his abilities as a No.10. However, if you compare his performance with Haaland, you will find that the Norwegian has helped the team win the League Cup and reach the FA Cup final.
In addition, Manchester City is also in a fierce championship battle with Arsenal in the Premier League. If Haaland helps his team win the domestic treble, he should be a real contender to win the Premier League Player of the Season award.
The No. 9 is still a few goals shy of a commendable 40-goal milestone this season and if he can reach that mark there’s no reason why he shouldn’t win the award. Bernardo Silva and Declan Rice should also be contenders, however, Bernardo struggled in the first half of the season and Rice struggled in the second half.

Fernandes’ efforts as United push for top four
Manchester United are favorites to finish in the top four this season, which means they will compete in next season’s Champions League. Fernandez undoubtedly played a key role in this.
However, his team’s performance in all competitions has been quite average compared to Manchester City and Arsenal.
That’s why I don’t think Bruno Fernandes’ assist numbers are enough to win him the Player of the Season award, even if he breaks the 20-mark. There’s no doubt he should be in the calculation, but in the end, any one of Haaland, Rice and Bernardo should end up winning the award.
