Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in decent form as the 2025/26 season comes to an end. Calvert-Lewin scored the equalizing goal for Leeds United against Tottenham Hotspur last Monday, May 11. Leeds United are now safe from relegation, but Tottenham Hotspur’s chances still hang in the balance.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s performances for Leeds United have helped him become Leeds’ top scorer this season. Leeds United also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, making their season a moderate success. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form so far in his debut season at Leeds United has been quite reasonable.
Is Dominic Calvert-Lewin fit enough to be included in England’s World Cup squad?
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s form has seen him score 14 goals in 37 games this season, the same number as Danny Welbeck’s 38 games. However, age is not in Welbeck’s favour, as he turns 36 this year.
Calvert-Lewin, on the other hand, is still only 29 years old. He has spent 10 seasons in England’s top flight, scoring 85 goals in more than 300 appearances for Everton and Leeds United. He could serve as a very good back-up striker for Harry Kane, who is in excellent form at Bayern Munich.
Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins endured a rather ordinary first half of the season but has returned to form over the past few months. Watkins has played 52 games for Villa this season, scoring 17 goals, and has previously played in major competitions.
Calvert-Lewin has made 12 appearances for the Three Lions so far, scoring four goals. This shows that he is not completely new to international football and if selected, he can prove his ability against weaker opponents.
On the other hand, he made 12 appearances for the national team in 2020 and 2021, 11 of them. He did not play a single game for England during a five-year break. Thomas Tuchel recalled him to the England squad for international friendlies against Uruguay and Japan earlier this year, but he only featured in one of those matches.

Lack of experience in big tournaments could work against him
As mentioned before, unlike Watkins and Welbeck, Calvert-Lewin has never represented the Three Lions in a major international competition to date. This could work against Thomas Tuchel when he chooses his side.
However, as Leeds United’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s performances suggest, he will certainly be considered when England’s final World Cup squad is chosen. Calvert-Lewin is one of the most reliable forwards in the country and his defensive performance has been outstanding.
However, Watkins may be a little better than Calvert-Lewin in the opposing paint, which means he may end up getting the nod ahead of the former.
Regardless, Calvert-Lewin is a key player for the club and will become an important forward in the Premier League next season. For now, Calvert-Lewin should only be focusing on Leeds United’s two remaining games in the Premier League this season, against Brighton and West Ham United.
