Excuse my potty mouth, sorry mom, but “I want to look like I’ve pooped!” This was a request I recently got from a client and one I’ve heard many times over the years . This is a succinct way of saying, “I want to look confident, professional, and competent in my role.” Who doesn’t want to look like that? I know I know!
Spring is here, which means you can no longer hide under a winter coat or baggy sweater if you haven’t already put on your layers. In addition to bright nights and warm weather, you’ll be invited to meetings, parties, drinks and other social occasions, so now is a good time to focus on your appearance and style. To help you, I share my five tried and tested methods below:-
5 tips to look like you’ve accomplished nothing:-
1. Check your diary
Write down what you want to do over the next few weeks. Think about occasions big and small, especially what you do most of the time. People often spend a lot of time focusing on what to wear to a one-time event, but what you wear every day is just as important – if not more important!
2. Edit your wardrobe
Change up your wardrobe in the new season and evaluate what you have to wear. Throw away anything that is worn, torn and/or doesn’t fit. Once you’ve done this, you’ll find it easier to see what you have and any potential gaps. Jot down in a journal what you must wear throughout the day and write a focused shopping list for any items you are missing.
3. Real
If you feel like yourself, you’re more likely to look confident and put together. I often see a huge difference between what clients think they “should” wear to work and what they like to wear on the weekends. Incorporate your personal style into your work attire by taking note of the pieces you like to wear. For example, if you wear a lot of color on the weekends but your work wardrobe is filled with darker shades, introduce pops of color into your work attire.
4. Get organized
Taking the time to organize your closet now will save you time and money in the long run. Don’t wait until an event is coming up and don’t wear clothing that feels tired and out of date. Plan your outfit ahead of time so you can avoid that last-minute “I have nothing to wear!” panic. If you need to buy anything, be sure to make a focused list and shop with a purpose.
5. Trust your gut
We’ve all been there, you put on something that doesn’t feel right and you can’t put your finger on what’s wrong, but you feel uncomfortable all day long. When you get dressed, trust your instincts and how the item really makes you feel. An outfit that looks good, feels good, and makes you comfortable for the day ahead will instantly boost your mood and confidence.
Remember, the goal is to feel good enough, not perfect. Outfits in real life are different than most social media posts. It’s okay if you don’t have the perfectly matched handbag, the latest “must-have” accessory, or salon-dried hair. Spring is the ideal opportunity to update your style and breathe new life into your wardrobe. Take action now to ensure you’re looking your best in spring and beyond.
