Liverpool announced on Saturday, May 30, that they have sacked Arne Slott after a disappointing 2025/26 season, ending the Dutchman’s two-year tenure as Liverpool manager.
The decision comes a year after Slott first led Liverpool to the Premier League title. However, a sharp decline in results this season ultimately led to Slott’s sacking, with Liverpool’s top brass deciding changes were needed ahead of the new season.
The Liverpool manager’s departure was confirmed in an official statement released on Friday following an end-of-season review.

“It goes without saying that this is a difficult decision for us as a club. Arne’s contribution to Liverpool during his time with us has been significant, meaningful and, most importantly, successful for the fans and ourselves,” Liverpool said in a club statement.
“We therefore have enormous appreciation for all that he has achieved, particularly as his work ethic, hard work and professionalism have been the foundation of everything he has achieved, further underscoring our view that he is a leader in his field.
“We have collectively come to the conclusion that changes are necessary in order for the club to move forward. Again, this is not a decision that has been taken lightly, absolutely not.”
“We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who won Liverpool their 20th league title.
“This achievement – made even more remarkable in his first season in charge – is built on the foundation of outstanding coaching and leadership every day.
“He also helped lead the club through one of its most difficult periods following the death of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed during that time spoke volumes about him as a person.
“We can therefore only wish Arne well in the next phase of his coaching career and our expectation is that he will continue to be successful. We do this knowing that his legacy at Liverpool remains intact and will become even more meaningful in the years and decades to come.”

Slott arrived at Liverpool in 2024 as Jurgen Klopp’s successor after impressing at Dutch side Feyenoord.
His first season exceeded expectations. The Liverpool boss led the Reds to the Premier League title and quickly won over supporters as he successfully tackled one of the most difficult jobs in football.
Many observers praised Slott for maintaining Liverpool’s level of play following Klopp’s departure and helping the club return to the top of English football.
Unfortunately for the Dutch, success was hard to sustain.
Sacked after finishing fifth in Premier League
Slott’s sacking comes after Liverpool struggled to maintain consistency after a frustrating season.
Despite entering the season with high expectations, the Reds failed to mount a serious challenge for the title and ended up fifth in the Premier League table. They also ended the tournament without a trophy.

The search for a new Liverpool manager is expected to begin quickly as the club aims to complete its plans before pre-season preparations begin.
