Defensive smashing location – Steve’s badminton blog and website

During training last week, Fred struggled to withstand Han Jian’s attack. This is not a lack of skills, but his positioning is wrong. This reminds me of an article I wrote about the dispatch to a defensive lift. This time, I will talk about where the lift is to take when it comes to the corner.

Defend attacks around the corner

The above image shows the angles that must be covered when an attack comes from a corner. Players need to be alert to attacks along the sideline, offensive off-road courts on the other side, or physical attacks on the player.

Straight

A straight line is always a danger because the opponent can plan to hit the shuttle straight along the line, and the risk of a shuttle going out is lower when the shuttle flies directly along the line. The opponent can then choose to exert more power in the attack to break the player’s defense by using brute force. That’s why we’re seeing top players approaching the sidelines while defending the attacks around the corner.

In the snapshot above, Lin Dan vers Lee Chong Wei, Lin Dan knows that Lee Chong Wei will likely hit his favorite shot, Cross Court Smash has no body turn, and despite this, Lin Dan is near the sidelines. Even the best players in the world, this is a precautionary measure. If Lee Chong Wei decides to do a direct crush and put power in, although that aspect is Lin Dan’s forehand side, it will be very difficult. Retrieving the crush from the forehand side does not require a turn, as the player can only jump to the side to reach it. However, Lin Dan and Momota took this precaution.

Off-road attack

There are 2 reasons why cross-court crossing is less threatening when attacking from the back corner in this case. First, the distance of the off-road course has further travel distance when moving diagonally. The attacker must always hit off-road shooting higher than a straight attack, as it requires further driving before reaching the net. In fact, this means that the net that the off-road ball shoots is “higher” because it reaches that height at a further distance from that height. This means that cross-court attacks will always be further away than straight attacks. Second, the cross-court attack will be longer in the air and as the player moves diagonally, he can see the attack’s trajectory clearer. This gives the player more time to reach the goal and has a greater chance of defending him to see.

It is precisely for these two reasons that players need to occupy the position on the side of the field where the opponent launches an attack.

in conclusion

This is the lesson Fred needs to learn during his training. Once he understands this and takes the right position in court, he can defend against these attacks.

That’s it.
