Our wardrobes are facing a challenge right now. Just when you’re thinking about what to wear back to the office after the pandemic is over, you now have to factor in 40-degree temperatures!
Unfortunately, it looks like heatwaves are going to become commonplace, so it pays to be prepared with heat-resistant clothing to ensure you don’t get sweltering at your desk.
I’ve put together some tips below to help you find the right work clothes that will keep you cool while looking stylish and smart.
keep it loose
Clothing that doesn’t hug your body is great for keeping you cool and comfortable. The good news is they’re on trend right now, so stores are full of wide-leg pants and flowy midi skirts. If you’ve ever seen my Instagram account, you’ll know that I wear this midi skirt so many times that I’m sure everyone is tired of me wearing it!
My dress is from H&M from last season, but they also currently have some gorgeous new midi skirt styles in stock
Choose natural fibers
Linen and cotton allow the skin to breathe, making them by far the best fabrics to wear in hot weather. You can’t go wrong with a cool crisp linen shirt in classic plain white or blue pinstripes, as they’re always appropriate for work. If you like wearing colors, you can also choose bright shades. I’m a huge fan of Uniqlo, but you can find them everywhere on the high street. Zara has some cute styles.
Don’t forget your underwear
You won’t find underwear that is 100% cotton because the underwear fabric contains elastane or lycra, which are similar but are trademarked brand names. This ensures the clothes are stretchy, comfortable and prevents them from falling off – always a good idea! Choose underwear with a high cotton content and cotton gussets. Skin tones are a must-have color in your wardrobe as they are less noticeable on lightweight fabrics and light colors.
keep toes hidden
Well, I know it depends on where you work and what you’re doing, but if you’re in any doubt, don’t stick your toes out! I have yet to meet a client working in a professional industry who was willing to have a face-to-face meeting or a demo that was presented. Imagine Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak debating in flip-flops! Neutral leather flats are great for summer, and if you prefer stilettos, wedge espadrilles are a great option.
Don’t overload accessories
In hot weather, less is more, so keep accessories to a minimum. This delicate and lightweight piece adds the finishing touch to an entire look. I usually love statement jewelry, but a necklace or bracelet that’s too big can make your skin sweaty and sticky. If you want a more dramatic look, layer a few beautiful pieces together.
