Over the past 15 years, I have edited hundreds of wardrobes as a personal stylist. In the past two weeks alone, I’ve edited five. And, while every client is unique, they do have one thing in common…
…Their closets are full of clothes, but it’s hard to find out what they feel good about.
When we chat before editing, they tell me a variety of reasons why it is done. This is the most common reason they think the wardrobe doesn’t work (and why it’s wrong).
“I don’t have a sense of fashion”
This is definitely nonsense! Everyone has a sense of style. Thanks to your life experience, you will be attracted by your colors, shapes and styles, which form the basis of your style. Creating outfits that fit your personal style, look good, and work for your lifestyle is a tricky thing – that’s where I can help.
“My figure doesn’t look good in anything”
I work with many women, most not the scale they want (and used) – I myself are one of them! If you accept your size and dress it well, you will look good. No matter what character you have, there is a great outfit out there – sometimes you have to dig deep to find it.
“The current trend is not for me”
I see many “trend” items that customers are affected but never wear them. Trends are exactly what brands have in that season, some will suit you, and some will not. Once you understand your personal style, you will know the trends that work for you and avoid becoming their slave.
“There is no brand that suits my needs”
Without a brand or store, you may find everything you need for a wardrobe. There are some styles for you, and you just need to look around for them. Always research online before buying and staying focused, online research online – yes – yes, that means not lingering towards the electrical department!
So if these aren’t why your wardrobe doesn’t work for you right now, what’s that?
The real reason your wardrobe doesn’t work for you
The main reason people’s wardrobe doesn’t work is actually simple: it doesn’t fit their lifestyle.
If you haven’t edited and updated your wardrobe for years, it will contain styles that don’t work now. Over the years, your life, figure, work roles, family status, etc. will change. If you haven’t adapted to clothing to consider these changes, they won’t work.
My client Diana struggles to know what to wear because she has moved from a career in finance to building her own coaching business. When we took off all the clothes from her previous character, there were only five – yes five! – The items she loves to wear for her new characters.
Apparently Diana needs smart casual outfits to take on her new role, and the formal outfit she wore at her last job is no longer suitable for her. In the subsequent personal shopping course, we created a capsule wardrobe that provided Diana with multiple great-looking outfits and fitted her new life.
