I’ve edited hundreds of wardrobes over the past 15 years as a personal stylist. I’ve edited five in the past two weeks alone. And, while every client is unique, they do have one thing in common…
… Their closets are full of clothes, but it’s hard to find clothes that make them feel comfortable.
When we chatted before editing, they told me various reasons for this. Here are the most common reasons they think their wardrobe isn’t working (and why they’re wrong).
“I have no sense of fashion”
This is absolutely nonsense! Everyone has a sense of style. Because of your life experiences, you are attracted to colors, shapes, and styles, which form the basis of your style. Creating clothing that suits your personal style, looks great, and fits your lifestyle is the tricky part – and that’s where I can help.
“My figure doesn’t look good in anything I wear.”
I work with a lot of women and most are not the body they want (and were) – I am one of them! If you accept your size and dress accordingly, you’ll look good. No matter your body shape, there’s an outfit out there that’s right for you—and sometimes you have to dig deep to find it.
“Current trends don’t suit me”
I see many “in” items that customers are influenced to buy but never wear. Fashion trends are the fashion trends of the brand for the season. Some are suitable for you and some are not. Once you understand your personal style, you’ll know which trends work for you and avoid becoming a slave to them.
“No brand can meet my needs”
There is no one brand or store where you can find everything you need for your wardrobe. There’s a style for you, you just have to shop around to find it. Always write down a list of what you’re looking for, research online before buying and stay focused – yes, that means don’t wander into the electrical department!
So, if none of these are reasons why your wardrobe isn’t working for you right now, what is?
The real reason your wardrobe isn’t working for you
The main reason people’s wardrobes don’t work is actually quite simple: it doesn’t fit their lifestyle.
If you haven’t edited and updated your wardrobe in a few years, it will contain styles that don’t fit your current life. Your life, body shape, work role, family situation, etc. all change over the years. If you don’t adjust your outfits to account for these changes, they won’t work.
My client, Diana, was transitioning from a career in finance to building her own coaching business, so it was hard for her to know what to wear. When we stripped off all the clothes from her previous character, there were only five pieces – yes, only five! – Items she likes to wear for new characters.
It was clear that Diana needed to wear smart casual clothes for her new role, and the formal clothes she wore at her previous job no longer suited her. During the personal shopping session that followed, we created a capsule wardrobe that provided Diana with multiple outfits that would look great and fit her new life.
