Liga MX releases 2026 Clausura schedule

Immediately after Toluca defended their Liga MX title on Sunday night, the league released its full regular season schedule for the 2026 Spring League. The timing feels intentional. Just weeks after the season ends, Mexico will host its World Cup openers in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, and as Mexican football further thrusts itself into the global spotlight, this fall season brings a sense of transition, urgency and meaning beyond the stadium itself.

Structural changes underline this feeling. The controversial “play-in” round has been eliminated, with only the top eight teams advancing directly to Lijira. The goal is to have a tighter, more intense schedule that ends in May before the World Cup kicks off on June 11 at the renovated Estadio Azteca. Every bit counts, and there’s much less room to glide around.

Toluca opens new season against Monterrey Realdos

The timeline wastes no time in conveying narrative weight. On Match Day 1 (January 10), the Toluca duo will travel north to face Monterrey Realdos at the BBVA Stadium. It was a heavy opener: Toluca had eliminated Monterrey in back-to-back playoff series, and coach Antonio “Turco” Mohamed had previously won the league title with Rayados. As the season begins, unfinished business is on the table.

Elsewhere on the opening weekend, Club America will travel to Tijuana, a city with a huge following, to take on a Xolos side led by teenage superstar Gilberto Mora. This type of matchup often defined Clausura’s early tone – brilliant, unpredictable, emotional.

The momentum continues rapidly. Game Day 2 pits the defending finalist Tigers against the Cougars, while Game Day 3 is a rematch of the most recent final: the Tigers faced Toluca on Jan. 17 at Collegiate Field. That same weekend, Pachuca faced Club America in a game that has quietly become one of the most tactically intriguing games in the league.

January ends with Cruz Azul traveling to Juarez on Match Day 4, a match that has stumbled the title contenders before.

CONCACAF Champions League starts in February

February adds another layer of difficulty as Liga MX clubs enter the CONCACAF Champions League, forcing the likes of Tigres, América and defending continental champions Cruz Azul to rely heavily on depth due to the extra games.

Cruz Azul will visit Toluca on February 7, while Monterrey, who struggled on the road last season, will face Club América on the same day. Rotation and fatigue will already impact results at this point in the calendar.

The headliner of El Clasico Matchday 6 is América vs. Chivas, scheduled for Saturday, February 14 at Akron Stadium. That same weekend, the Tigers will face Cruz Azul in a Sunday night showdown that could already decide who the top four spots will be.

The Olympic University Stadium then took center stage. On February 21, the Blue Cross hosted Chivas, and the Cougars faced Monterrey the next day. Game 8 ends February with one of the strongest rosters of the season:

Tijuana vs Pumas

Team USA vs. Tigers

This is the stage that distinguishes competitors from pretenders.

March and April calendar features El Clasico

March kicks off with Atlas hosting Tijuana before one of the most anticipated weekends in the league. Matchday 10 features two El Clasico cards: Atlas vs. Chivas, and the ever-shaky El Clasico between Tigres and Monterrey.

The intensity barely waned. Matchday 11 includes Pumas vs. Cruz Azul, while matchday 12 includes Pachuca vs. Toluca, Puma vs. América, and Monterrey vs. Chivas at home. Every game has an impact on the top eight.

As April approaches, margins tighten further. On matchday 13, when Chivas hosted Pumas and Tigres traveled to Tijuana – where they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Ligia last season (before completing a comeback at home) – the final stages of the game began to take shape. In the 14th round, the Tigers faced Chivas, the Americas faced the Blue Cross, and the Atlas faced Monterrey.

Matchday 15 set a decisive moment: Club America versus Toluca, a symbolic preview of a potential championship. Matchday 16 could also be decisive, as Pachuca vs. Tijuana could determine who makes the final playoff spot.

The regular season ends with rivalries and results everywhere: Monterrey at Santos, Atlético San Luis at Juárez with playoff hopes potentially hanging in the balance, América at home against Atlas, Toluca at Leon and Pachuca at Cougars.

Playoff series to be held in May

The 2026 Liguilla Spring will be held in May. Since there are no play-offs, the playoffs will feature four two-legged quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals and finals. The CONCACAF Champions League semi-finals will overlap in late April and early May, further testing elite teams with ambitions on multiple fronts.

The winter transfer window is important

The winter transfer window will close after Matchday 5 on February 9. Rotations will be common early in the season as the club balances fitness, chemistry and continental commitments. Club América under André Jardine became famous for this approach.

The movement has begun. Chivas has signed 22-year-old attacking midfielder Brian Gutiérrez from MLS side Chicago Fire, who has strong family ties to the club. Sergio Ramos ends his tenure in Mexico, leaving Monterrey at the age of 39 after a productive period.

What makes the 2026 Fall League compelling is not just the competition itself, but its context. A shortened schedule, anticipation of the World Cup, tactical evolution and real equality at the top have created a season where every weekend means something. The MX League has rarely had so much narrative weight, and as the calendar turns to summer, the league has a chance to remind everyone just how high its ceiling really is.
